Enhancement
Project: Walthamstow - The Mall
Location: Walthamstow
Type: Refurbishment
The Mall at Walthamstow provided a project that incorporated a large-scale
refurbishment of a covered car park lying below a major suburban shopping
centre. The original car park design meant that there was very little natural
light allowed into the car park. Also, the single suspended parking deck was
large scale, resulting in various people having difficulty locating their vehicles when
returning to their cars.
The concrete car park deck was untreated, and the walls and columns unpainted
leaving an adour and uninviting environment for the shoppers. The decks and walls
were unattractive concrete.
It is becoming more important to shoppers
that the car park is an attractive and safe environment and it is the car park
that is the gateway to the shopping centre itself. Thus the aesthetics of the
car park are as equally important as the shopping centre itself.
To overcome these problems USL StructureCare applied a colour coordinated
parking system, allowing visitors of the Mall to easily recognise the area in
which their vehicle was parked. This colour system included the unusual task of
painting brickwork as well as concrete walls in order to section the car park
off into different colour coded parking areas.
The second element of the project was to cover and protect the car park deck, soffit and
vertical elements of the car park.
The decks were protected using the Conideck 2257 system to an area of 15,000m2
incorporating coloured pedestrian walkways in The Mall's corporate colour's. This
system is a rapid curing coating allowing the treated areas to be ready for
trafficking in only a few hours. It offers high levels of protection,
durability and slip resistance to the surface, whilst creating an aesthetically
pleasing appearance.
In addition to the decks the installation of 25,000m2 of the high
quality Covercrete Anti Carbonation coating which is manufactured in-house by
USL's group company Nufins. The material protects the concrete elements of the
structure from the ingress and harmful Carbon gasses, whilst at the same time
dramatically enhancing the parking environment by the predominant use of the colour white.
Furthermore, The movement joints had failed and were allowing water ingress into the smaller
lower parking deck. as a result USL StructureCare installed over 150m of joint again using products
manufactured and supplied in-house by USL.
