Hallcraig Car Park, UK

The new £2.7 million Hallcraig Street car park in Airdrie was hailed as a practical example of public bodies working in partnership. The car park, opened by the council, provides an additional 558 town centre spaces. Built in two phases, the facility includes a single storey deck over the original main car park with a ramp to the smaller Upper Mill Street car park, plus a further upper level. The car park includes 20 spaces for drivers with disabilities.

The scheme comprised the construction of a new two-storey car park comprising a steel frame and precast units. An unusually thick screed was used to create good falls to gulleys. The greater amount of movement and cracking associated with steel frame structures also had
to be taken into account, so USL StructureCare worked with the main contractor to overturn the existing specification in favour of the CONIDECK® waterproofing deck membrane.

USL StructureCare carried out the installation of 5000 m2 of CONIDECK® 2205 to the car deck and ramp. CONIDECK®'s suitability for year-round application was an advantage as the system needed to be installed during February and March.

The elastomeric capability of CONIDECK® was particularly important to the contract because of the car park's steel-frame construction. The system previously specified would have required a more expensive primer, and CONIDECK® could be installed with no such concerns.

The scheme created hundreds of new car parking spaces for Airdrie shoppers and visitors ahead of schedule, boosting the local economy.
