Keppel Viaduct is part of the Ayer Rajah Expressway
(AYE) which spans 2.2km and is one of the most heavily trafficked
expressways in Singapore. The project comprised of the widening of

expansion joint system was selected by Singapore Piling on
behalf of Land Transport Authority (Singapore) to be installed at
Keppel Viaduct. There were 35 new Britflex BEJ expansion joints
used to replace existing joints. Britflex BEJ is registered with the UK
Highways Agency for use on highway bridge decks on all classes of
roads and motorways. It is a surface mounted mechanical system,
with an elastomeric insert between two metal runners/carrier rails.
Set into a rapid curing resin compound known as Britflex Cold Cure
Resin (Tropical) Mortar, designed as a cold curing system which
accelerates the rate of cure and accommodates early trafficking
(within 2 hours). The polyureide resin provides unrivalled
anchorage to the deck due to its remarkable bonding qualities.
BEJ system offers the following advantages:
- Excellent bond strength not just with concrete but also with
asphalt and the steel rail
- Rapid on site assembly
- Minimal disruption to traffic
- Low future maintenance costs
- Hard wearing with in built flexibility
Given the tight schedule and short lane closure duration
available, Britflex Cold Cure (Tropical) has once
again proven itself as the ideal solution to such challenging

The improvement works have increased the capacity of the viaduct
which will enable smoother traffic flow, to cater for new
developments in the areas nearby. Project ran from September 2013
to April 2016 and was fully endorsed by the client.
