Basildon University Hospital

With 1600 spaces, the multi-storey car park at Basildon University Hospital was a massive investment. Built in 2008 in direct response to requests for improvements to parking from local people, the £8 million MSCP was named one of the ten best hospital car parks in the country following a 2011 survey by consumer watchdog WHICH? However, its lightweight surface membrane had failed in a relatively short period of time and end client Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust needed a durable alternative to be installed.

The car park's structure comprised of a steel frame construction precast concrete planks covered by a structural screed. The existing deck waterproofing system from a competitor had cracked to the extent that it had to be removed before Masterseal Traffic 2205 (formerly Conideck) waterproof deck membrane could be installed.

The car park needed to remain operational throughout the refurbishment project, so a phased approach was necessary.

Masterseal Traffic 2205 is a liquid-applied, crack bridging car park deck waterproofing system based on advanced polymeric materials. It consists of an epoxy substrate primer, a spray applied elastomeric polyurethane/polyurea hybrid waterproofing membrane, a tough hard wearing polyurethane wear coat and choice of topcoats. The seamless coating has an attractive, skid resistant, UV and weather resistant finish which is easy to clean and maintain and resistant to fuels, battery acid, de-icing salts and alkaline cleaners.

  • USL StructureCare the UK's leading car park refurbishment contractor installed the new deck membrane over a period of 10 weeks in the last quarter of 2011 and the project ran smoothly throughout.
  • Cold-applied deck membrane Masterseal Traffic 2205 was used in combination with topcoat Masterseal TC 681, which offered a combination of rapid cure and excellent wear properties.
  • Main contractor Osborne was happy with the end result and chose to use the same system again on a future project.

Since the completion of Basildon Hospital MSCP, USL StructureCare have also worked on a number of other high profile projects including other NHS clients, most recently at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool and Stratford Hospital.
