A47 Bridge over the A1 at Peterborough
Feba Joint
This project involved the refurbishment of an existing bridge on the outskirts
of Peterborough. This particular bridge is heavily used by local commuters. Bearing this in mind it was important that USL BridgeCare could complete the
job with minimum disturbance to traffic. The refurbishment meant the bridge was
completely closed for the duration of the repairs. Works included
the application of a new waterproof membrane in preparation for the resurfacing
of the bridge prior to the installation of new expansion joint systems.
To waterproof the 250 m2 bridge deck, USL BridgeCare applied the 'Britdex
MDP™ system. This is a spray applied one or two coat (in this case one coat)
system that is a highly adaptable bridge deck waterproofing system, based on
the latest Methacrylate Resin technology. This system produces seamless coatings preventing any
cracking or vulnerability in the protection, it is also rapid curing, meaning
it is perfect for such projects where speed of completion is essential. After
the 'Britdex MDP™' coating had dried USL BridgeCare' F.E. tack coat was
applied in order to prepare the deck for resurfacing. The entire waterproofing
and preparation work was completedwithin a two days. The road was then ready
to be resurfaced.
On completion of the resurfacing the bridge was then ready to have the two new
Feba joints installed. These were both at a length of 8.100 metres. The Feba
joint system is an asphalt plug joint type suitable for low to medium movement
capacity bridges i,e. is suitable for movements up
to ± 20mm horizontally and ± 1.5mm vertically. These joints were installed
within a day meaning that from start to finish the USL BridgeCare involvement
on the project took no longer than three days with a day in-between for the
bridge to be resurfaced.
